2 days agoDirector Taco Dibbits of the Rijksmuseum wants to go to extremes to acquire Rembrandts 1636 painting De Vaandeldrager for the Netherlands when the work appears on the market. 2 days agoDe Vaandeldrager is volgens Dibbits het belangrijkste werk van Rembrandt dat nog in particulier bezit is en de laatste kans om een schilderij van dit enorme belang te kunnen kopen. On Tuesday it was announced that the work might go up for sale after the French government decided not to buy it from its current owner the Rothschild family.
The 1636 work known as De Vaandeldrager or The Standard Bearer in English is expected to be sold off by the Rothschild family which has had the work in its possession since Jacob James de Rothschild purchased it in the 1840s for 840 at Christies in London. It was announced on Tuesday that the work may go up for sale after the French government has decided not to buy it from its current owner. Sinds 1844 maakt het werk onderdeel uit.
It is not yet clear whether and when the work will go on sale. Dit werk bevindt zich al eeuwenlang in privécollecties.
